Welcome to Hidden Falls
Picture of Hidden Falls in the Fall
"...where man can slow down to a walk and live his life to full measure." Quote from Twilight Zone, Season 1, Episode 30, A Stop at Willouhby.
Back in 2009 we sold our 2600 sq. foot colonial home and moved to the Northeast Kingdom in VT. Named for its natural beauty which has been virtually untouched by urban development. Although it took a lot of looking and many disappointments along the way, (stories for later) we finally found a piece of property, our little slice of heaven. What really attracted us was the land, all 197 acres. We could see the potential.
There are 3 beaver ponds in our back yard, minus the beavers right now. The stream that comes out of the last pond flows over a waterfall. We did not know about the waterfall when we bought the house. During the first rain storm after we moved in, we could hear the roar of water. We walked 300 feet down the stream from the house and found a 30' waterfall. We knew then what we were going to call our property, "Hidden Falls". There's some fantastic views from the mountain top spanning NH and VT.
We live off grid, yes it is possible to do without breaking the bank, so to speak. We live like everyone else. We have a TV and can watch the latest shows, a DVD player, lights go on by a switch, our refrigerator and stove use gas. In the winter we heat using our soapstone wood stove. Yes, all the comforts everyone else has except we have no heating or electric bills or mortgage to pay. We are self-sufficient in many respects growing our own vegetables, getting eggs from our chickens and hunting for our meat. Our objective is to live more simply
With all this land we were overwhelmed at first not knowing where to turn for help. We got introduced to VT Coverts which helped tremendously in providing guidance to help with our land objectives. One of the first things we did was to engage a Forester who put together a Forest Management Plan.
A work in progress....
